Largest study yet on "untouchability" in India – new report by MRG partner
3 February 2010
Navsarjan Trust, a Gujarat-based organisation that promotes the rights of Dalits, and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights have published a ground-breaking report that provides evidence to refute the belief that caste-based discrimination is limited to remote and economically underdeveloped corners of India.
Researchers spent the last four years compiling data from 1,589 villages, exposing the current status of caste-based discrimination against Dalits in the state of Gujarat, India. The report presents a comprehensive view of current "untouchability" practices across Gujarat, bringing together political science, sociology, law, public policy and community organizing.
