1A: preparatory seminars

September 2008

We started cooperation with the elementary school "Fantazia", which is a leader in innovative and creative methods of education in Banská Bystrica. We prepared a seminar for children where we discussed issues around development aid and asked them to prepare art works to be used in an invitation to an art competition on development issues. Children prepared more than 20 art works, and after making photos and scanning these works we developed a poster and invited schools from the region to the competition.

20 September, 5 December
We prepared two information seminars for teachers where we presented both the project, the competition, the Rights Based Approach to Development. The competition methodology was elaborated in cooperation with the school Fantazia. We also travelled to several other cities to explain the idea of the competition in meetings with school directors.

22 October
A press conference took place, information about the project was submitted to a press agency, the printed media ,SME, published an article about it and also two radio stations (Lumen and Regina) broadcast news about the press conference. The invitation was prepared and we addressed all the elementary schools in the region via e-mails and contacted authorities which are responsible for running the elementary schools. The conditions for the competition were very flexible; we offered schools the possibility to either have an internal competition first or send the best posters to us, or to send us their works directly.

Outcome

  • Workshop on development for the children (65 children participated)
  • Posters for invitation to art competition (50 pcs)
  • Material for the methodology (50 pcs)
  • Information material about RBA (50pcs)
  • Press conference
  • Two seminars for the teachers (27 participants, all women)

22 October - 17 December 2008

The competition started on October 22nd 2008. The press conference took place in the school Fantazia, where the children were engaged in the competition preparation. Deadline for submitting pieces was the 17 December 2008, and the commission met on 22 December to choose the winner. The competition's title was Different Faces of the World, and we focused on the diversity of the ways of living and living standards in various parts of the world. We tried to avoid negative stereotypes about development countries and rather show the richness in their human resources, nature, etc. Posters and messages for the campaign were sent out to the politicians.

Outcome

57 teams and many individuals entered their works in the competition. The commission evaluated 114 art works from format A4 to A0. Various creative techniques were used including 3D art works.
